The Southwest Business of the Year Awards is one of the regions most respected celebrations of enterprise, spotlighting companies that are innovating, disrupting and thriving. At this year’s awards ceremony in Bristol, Tomcat SNI proudly stood out, shortlisted in both innovation and International Trade, and ultimately taking home the Innovation Award.
About the Southwest Business Awards
Now in its second year, the awards bring together businesses of all sizes to honour achievements across categories such as sustainability, Community impact, International Trade, and Innovation. A rigorous judging process ensures that winners truly represent the best of the southwest, with each company pitching their stories before a panel of experts.
Redefining Inclusive Cycling
Tomcat’s Journey began in the late 1990’s when founder Bob Griffin MBE invented the original Carer Control system, a rear steering and braking mechanism that allows carers to fully control a trike from behind the rider. This invention transformed the market for children’s disability trikes, enabling thousands of young people to cycle safely and confidently.
Tomcat expanded into the adult market in 2017, addressing the needs of teenagers and adults who faced barriers to cycling. This ensured that inclusive cycling was not just for childhood but could remain a lifelong source of mobility and joy.
Today, Tomcat’s commitment to innovation is stronger than ever. With over 40 purpose-built innovations, they continue to engineer solutions that make a difference, each designed to remove barriers and empower riders of all ages and abilities.
Why innovation matters
Tomcat was proud to be shortlisted in two categories at the Southwest Business Awards, innovation and international trade. Being recognised across both areas reflects the scale of Tomcat’s impact, pioneering design and a growing international presence that takes inclusive cycling to a global audience.
“As a business based in the Southwest, we are extremely proud to win this award in Innovation. It’s a reflection of 27 years of designing British made products that have changed so many people’s lives. Congratulations to all the winners and runners up on the evening, it was heartening to be in a room with so many organisations doing great work!” – Bob Griffin MBE, Founder of Tomcat.
The innovation award recognises businesses that push boundaries and create solutions that change lives. Tomcat’s win highlights not just their engineering excellence, but the human stories behind their work. Children rediscovering play, and adults regaining independence. More than anything, this award is a celebration of those everyday victories.
