Finding the right adaptive tricycle for a child or adult with additional needs can feel overwhelming, especially when standard bikes simply aren’t suitable. Many families don’t realise how much difference a professionally assessed special needs trike can make, not just for mobility, but for confidence, independence, and quality of life.

This case study follows Rob, who first rode a Tomcat trike as a child and rediscovered adaptive cycling decades later. Through a full assessment and the right equipment, Rob regained the freedom to enjoy outdoor activity safely and independently. His journey highlights what so many families experience: when mobility equipment is tailored to the individual, the results can be life‑changing.

Discovering Adaptive Tricycles for Children with Additional Needs

Marion and her son Rob first discovered Tomcat when Rob was around eight years old. At that time, Bob Griffin, Tomcat’s founder and chief designer, was only just beginning to build what would become a leading specialist mobility company.

Rob had been unable to ride any other tricycle, but the moment he tried his Tomcat, everything changed. He took to it “like a fish to water”, and for the first time, cycling felt truly possible. The trike became a source of joy, freedom, and independence throughout his childhood.

As Rob grew into his teens and eventually outgrew the trike, life moved on. Replacing it slipped down the list, but the need never went away. Marion never forgot how transformative that first Tomcat had been.

Returning to Specialist Cycling Equipment as an Adult

Twenty years later, an unexpected opportunity brought Marion and Rob back to Tomcat.

In December 2021, Tomcat launched a “Name a Trike” competition to celebrate a new design collaboration with Wheels for All. The new product was a hand‑propelled version of the bestselling Tomcat Dragon, created to give even more riders the chance to enjoy independent cycling.

Inspired by a stormy sky, Marion submitted two names — Thunder and Lightning, and Thunderbolt. When the winning name was announced at the National Cycle Show in April 2022, Marion and Rob were stunned: Thunderbolt had been chosen.

Marion was overjoyed. “I’ve never won anything like this before,” she said. “I was so excited and so happy for Rob.” She knew how much it would mean for him to rediscover the freedom he’d loved as a child.

Getting the Right Adaptive Trike

Although The Thunderbolt was an exciting prize, it wasn’t the right model for Rob’s needs. After speaking with the Tomcat team, they agreed to donate the hand‑propelled trike to Wheels for All, ensuring it would still benefit riders who needed it.

In its place, Tomcat provided Rob with a fully assessed and customised Tomcat Fizz, a model far better suited to him.

The process was simple and stress‑free. “Everything was discussed over the phone,” Marion explained. “It was all very easy.”

In October 2022, Tomcat assessor Kevin Barry and colleague Nazia White delivered the Fizz to Marion’s home in West Sussex. The moment Rob climbed on and set off down the road, his joy was unmistakable. Within seconds, he was riding confidently and loving every minute.

How Adaptive Trikes Improve Independence, Confidence, and Outdoor Access

Once the right trike was selected and delivered, the impact was immediate.

Rob was able to get outdoors more easily, reconnecting with the world in a way that felt joyful and freeing.

“It’s enabled Rob to go out and see the world from a different perspective,” Marion said. “He has so much fun.”

For Marion, the benefits go far beyond exercise. The trike has become a way for Rob to enjoy independence, family time, and simple pleasure, things that can be harder to access when your child has additional needs.

She also understands how daunting specialist equipment can feel for families.

“When your child has additional needs, you can’t just walk into a shop and buy a bike,” she said. “Specialist equipment is more expensive, so parents often think it’s out of reach, but there is funding out there.”

Her message to other families is clear:

“If you think your child would love a trike, go for it. I always recommend Tomcat because their trikes are designed by someone who truly understands disability and individual needs.”

Adaptive Cycling That Makes a Lasting Difference

Today, Rob’s new trike is more than a competition prize, it’s a way back to something he loved. For Marion, seeing him ride again has been a powerful reminder of just how much the right equipment can change a life.

Book a Demo or Assessment

If you or someone you support is looking to return to cycling with greater stability, comfort and independence, a Tomcat adult trike assessment can help identify the right solution.
